Robert Heinlein called his armored soldiers of the future Mobile Infantry, or MI (an obvious reference to American GIs) in Starship Troopers. In Aliens, the soldiers employed to help Ripley called themselves marines. It stands to reason that any form of marine (that is, an armed soldier in the employ of the navy) who did his business in space might at some point call themselves Space Marines.

Well, not according to Games Workshop. The company that created Warhammer 40,000 has as its centerpiece, the Space Marines(tm) and woe be unto you if anything you do involves someone with a spacey marine-type occupation. You can read the harrowing details of a small indy-book publisher who ran into the GW juggernaut recently at Popehat — a fantastic legal site, and heroes to the geeky downtrodden.

Today’s comic, a special double-sized episode, is a labor of love both for GW and in solidarity for author¬†MCA Hogarth, the victim here. Fans of the Warhammer 40K games should find references in every frame. Fans of sticking it to the man when he’s being an asshole should find just as many.
