One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War

As we have just mentioned, the town of Belchite is known in our country for having been one of the bloodiest scenes of the Spanish Civil War. The town was completely destroyed after the battle that took place here between August 24 and September 6, 1937. At that time, the town had about 3,812 inhabitants, but, unfortunately, it was totally destroyed after the battle. In addition, more than 6,000 people, including civilians and soldiers, died. Interestingly, after the battle, Francisco Franco He did not want to rebuild the town, but decided to leave the ruins intact to remember his victory. The new Belchite was built next to the ruins, a construction carried out by prisoners of war.

A cursed town

Due to the events that have occurred in Belchite throughout its history, many people believe that it is a cursed town. The Romans and Carthaginians reportedly already clashed here during the Punic Wars. In addition, in 1809 the First Battle of Belchite took place here during the Civil War, a battle in which the French were victorious. Years later they also took place confrontations during the Carlist War. The last great challenge that Belchite had to face was the so-called Battle of Belchite during the Civil War, which we have already told you about before.
