The souks
Before showing you the Marrakech Souk in more depth, we want to explain in a few words what souks are. So, it's about the street markets traditional of the Arab countries. They are generally held outdoors and usually take place on a certain day of the week or at a specific time of the year. In general, they are located in the central square of the town and there are purchases and sales of all kinds of items.
The one in Marrakech, the largest in the Maghreb
The Souk in Marrakech is considered the largest in the entire Maghreb. In fact, we are talking about kilometers and kilometers of alleys that house all kinds of establishments. Of course, it should be borne in mind that, in general, these are very small positions. Some calculations estimate that there are 100 stores for every 100 meters.
Divided by artisans
The Marrakech Souk has its entrance in the Jamaa el Fna Square, occupying, as we have just mentioned, a lot of labyrinthine streets. As soon as you enter you will be able to perceive the bustle that is experienced within this place, which in some sections is covered by wooden slats to protect the space from the Sun. On the other hand, you should bear in mind that the Souk is divided by artisans from different guilds, being able to find dyers, basket makers or hardware stores, among other trades.
What you can find in the Souk
As we have already told you, the Souk is grouped by different guilds. Thus, in the establishments you will find food, clothing, spices, rugs, handicrafts, typical objects of the region, ingredients to make spells ... Among the most beautiful and famous areas of the place we find the Soyuk from Teinturiers, which is the souk of the dry cleaners, where you will discover a beautiful print of dyed pieces put to dry.
Bargain
If you have the opportunity to visit the Marrakech Souk, you should know that haggling is almost mandatory. In fact, you will have to pay at most a third of what they ask you initially. On the other hand, we recommend that you pay attention disregard from the guides that claim to get better prices in stores, since all they want is to get commissions. Therefore, it is best that you deal with the seller alone.
When to visit the Souk
Although the Marrakech Souk is open every day of the week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., except Friday, which closes in the morning, we recommend that you schedule your visit to this spectacular place in the morning, since in the afternoon you run the risk of finding yourself some other closed position.
