The tower that will measure more than a kilometer

On April 27 the works of the Kingdom tower, in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), which will become one of the most impressive buildings in the world.

When finished, this skyscraper, which has been on the table for years and several months of preparation, will be the tallest in the world, at a few thousand meters (1,007, according to official data), almost 180 more than the tallest tower today, the Burj Khalifa. This impressive tower has been designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. Smith was also the main architect of the building Burj Khalifa, when I worked for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, SOM.

Although the idea of ​​reaching a height of 1,600 meters was considered in the initial project, it was later specified that the building would reach the figure of 1 kilometer. The Kingdom Tower will cost some 1,200 million dollars, a figure that can change as the work progresses, which could take about 63 months of work. Behind all this project is the Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talal, nephew of Saudi King Abdullah and one of the world's leading investors.

Inspired by desert leaves

The Kingdom Tower will house a hotel, apartments, offices and, logically, the highest viewpoint on the planet. As for the design, it is inspired by the folds of the leaves of the vegetation desert. In addition, it is known that the building will have a high-performance exterior wall in order to reduce energy consumption and that on each side there will be large shaded terraces with views of the city and the Red Sea.
