The Romanesque ensemble of the Vall de Boí

After talking to you about Freedom Ship, a ship still not built that pretends to be an authentic city in the middle of the sea, we go directly to the mountain, specifically to the interior of Catalonia, where we can discover the corner that has been named as the first Rural Wonder of Spain in 2013: the Vall de Boí.

This set of valleys and mountains located in the L’Alta Ribagorça region (Lleida) houses a magnificent monumental complex Romanesque, exceptional for being the concentration in a small space of such a large number of churches of the same architectural style, preserved over time with few modifications that have significantly altered its initial conception. Do you want to know more details about the Vall de Boí?

Eight churches and a hermitage

During the 11th and 12th centuries, the Boí Valley experienced an important construction and artistic activity. Groups of stonecutters, master painters and artisan workshops erected, decorated and furnished a set of Romanesque churches exceptional: Sant Climent de Taüll and Santa María de Taüll, Sant Joan de Boí, Santa Eulalia de Erill la Vall, Sant Feliu de Barruera, La Nativitat and Sant Quirc de Durro, Santa María de Cardet and Assumpció de Coll. In total, eight churches and a hermitage.

These churches were built under the influence of the Romanesque Lombard and above all, the bell towers stand out, slender square plan towers that fulfilled the function of communication and surveillance of the territory.

The Romanesque churches of the Boí Valley are so important that they were declared a World Heritage Site by the Unesco on November 30, 2000.
