Visit the Catacombs of Paris

On several occasions we have spoken to you in Hard Hobbit To Break of the many interesting places that you can find in Paris. Today I would like to talk about one of them but it is not as well known as the most famous: the Catacombs. A chilling place that was created at the end of the 18th century and which houses the rest of 6 million Parisians, whose bones were moved from various cemeteries due to lack of hygiene as there were too many people buried there.

The Catacombs of paris they have about two kilometers of long and narrow corridors, excavated in limestone quarries, which supposes a fascinating landscape under the ground of the city. They are full of bones and skulls that come together in very elaborate piles and with a symmetrical shape, everything very organized. It was built as a tribute to the deceased, thus achieving something artistic and creative with his remains.

Catacombs tour

Almost 300,000 people visit the Parisian catacombs every year, and there is only one part open to the public, although it is the one with the most bones. There is a tour that begins with a short walk through a spiral staircase leading to a long tunnel that doesn't have much light. The tunnels have many information signs in both French and English to explain the history of each of them. As you go through each room you see hundreds of thousands of bones hanging.

Historic place

Whether you like archeology or not, it is certainly a visit that you should do as it is worth it. It should be noted that it is not recommended for children or for people with a significant disability since you have to upload some 200 stairs at different stages. The total tour is about 45 minutes, and the catacombs are in the 14th district, near the Montparnasse neighborhood.
