Marojejy National Park in Madagascar

Visiting a National Park is always an excellent option no matter where in the world you are. I recently discovered one in a travel report and today I would like to write about it. Its about Marojejy National Park, which is in Madagascar, specifically in the Sava region, in the northeast of the country. With an extension of more than 55,000 hectares, it is concentrated around the Marojejy massif, a mountain range that exceeds 2,000 meters of altitude.

In 2007 he received the distinction of World Heritage, and previously it had already been named Natural Reserve and National Park. In this park there is a great variety of habitats that are distributed by zones. In the lower elevations there is a beautiful jungle that intermingles with the forests in the upper parts. In the areas of the summits there are cloud forests with thickets that are a true natural spectacle.

Flora and fauna

Thanks to its diversity of habitats you can find a great variety of animal and plant species, with almost 120 species of birds, 150 reptiles and amphibians and more than 10 lemurs. One of the lemurs out there, the silky sifaca, is one of the 25 most endangered primates in the world. The hoof helmet It is the bird that has become an icon of this National Park. As for the flora, there are more than 2,000 species of flowering plants.

Camping area

In Marojejy there are 3 camps where you can stay to rest while you go on the route. The one in Mantella is 450 meters above sea level, the one in Marojejia at 775 and the one in Simpona at 1250, right in the center of the montane rain forest. The of Simpona It is the base camp for all those who want to ascend to the summit, a difficult ascent that can last about 5 hours despite being only two kilometers.
