Óbidos Castle in Portugal

I have told you on several occasions how lucky we are to have a neighboring country like Portugal since it offers us fantastic places to visit and all this very close to where we live, without needing large displacements. I see this country as the perfect place to get away on a bridge or on a weekend and thus discover little by little more corners.

Today I would like to tell you about a town that is not one of the best known but is beautiful. Is about Óbidos, a small village of about 3,000 inhabitants where you will find the ruins of a fortress that had the important mission of defending one of the most important ports in the Atlantic Ocean for centuries. Currently the area was changing and the coast is now about 10 kilometers from what is the Óbidos Castle.

The main building of this imposing fortress used as a hotel and it is the most luxurious in the city, offering an unforgettable stay to any of its guests surrounded by nature and the most deeply rooted traditions in all the towns in the area. This castle suffered major damage in an earthquake in 1755 and in all its facilities you can discover its entire history.

In addition to a National Monument, the castle was named in 2007 as one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal. Very close to the castle is the Óbidos lagoon, an ideal place to spend the day with the family having a picnic or also to enjoy an adventure time practicing some water sport such as swimming or windsurfing.
