Have you heard of the small town of Fucking (Austria)? And what about the Principality of Sealand 10 km. off the English coast of Suffolk or the "people" of Erving´s Location in the American state of New Hampshire?
Well, today we are going to tell the story of Tierra de mar. When we recover from the shock we will show you other strange places.
We go back to the World War II. To defend themselves from attacks by German aviation, the British installed maritime platforms. When the war ended, the platforms were abandoned and some people took the opportunity to install pirated radio stations. Among them was Paddy roy bates, who founded the radio Essex, which like the rest of the pirates was closed. He would open a radio and they would close it for him, so he stayed for a long time.
On September 2, 1967 Roy came to Roughs Tower and verified that it was in international waters. He immediately dismissed the radio project and after a small trial, which went in his favor, he moved with his wife and son and founded the "Principality of Sealand". He created a shield and flag, a coin (the American equivalent Sealand dollar), an official language (English), and a motto "E Mare Libertas".
And of course, as a good nation, it has its Constitution, which was written in 1975. Some parts of it:
- Any ordinance applied in Sealand through the properly constituted Senate will take precedence over such laws.
- Sealand's official language is English and all official documentation must be in that language.
