As we told you a few days ago, the town of Tejeda It has been chosen as the first Rural Wonder of Spain in 2016, an initiative carried out by Toprural for five years now taking into account the opinion of its users. Thus, thanks to the votes obtained by this wonderful town, Gran Canaria becomes the first island in the country to have a municipality on the list of the 7 Rural Wonders of Spain.

Despite having managed to rank first on the list, Tejeda is a town unknown to many. So today Hard Hobbit To Break We wanted to move to the Canary Islands to talk a little more about this corner that we are sure you will fall in love with. Would you like to join us?

Natural heritage

Located in the center-west of Gran Canaria, Tejeda is made up of its municipal center and its 18 neighborhoods. As you can see for yourself by taking a look at the images that we show you in our gallery, it stands out for its natural heritage. In this sense, it is important to bear in mind that the municipal term is located in the so-called Tejeda Volcanic Caldera, which is characterized by the alternation of embedded ravines and steep mountains. The Cone Dikes System deserves a special mention; whose focus is located 1,700 meters deep. In Tejeda is one of the symbols of the island. We are referring to Roque Nublo, a basaltic monolithic that was formed millions of years ago thanks to the eruptive volcanic processes that also formed the island. A few kilometers away is the Roque Bentayga, a larger monolith that was once a place of worship for the Canarian aborigines.

Cultural heritage

Do not think that Tejeda surprises only for its natural environment, but also for its cultural heritage. We must highlight the Roque Bentayga, which, as we have anticipated, was chosen as a sacred place by the ancient aboriginal canaries, who lived in close relationship with nature. Here are the Cuevas del Rey and some stone engravings that are worth visiting. We must also highlight its museums (Abraham Cárdenes Sculpture Museum, Tejeda Museum of Traditions, Medicinal Plants Center and the Tres Cruces Museum) and the Nuestra Señora del Socorro Church. On the other hand, it is important to note that Tejeda is one of the few towns in Gran Canaria that has managed to maintain the traditional architecture of the municipality, with stone, wood and tile as the main materials.

Gastronomy and folklore

As it could not be otherwise, we must also talk about the gastronomy of Tejeda. Above all, its almond sweets made by hand stand out, although it is also worth trying the "Bienmesabe and the" Mazapanes ", other typical sweets from the municipality. Of course, Canarian music is also present in this town, with the timple as the most representative instrument of Canarian folklore.

Walking trails

Finally, we want to comment that Tejeda offers a network of rehabilitated trails for the use of walkers looking for nature and leisure. The route that goes from the town of Tejeda to Roque Nublo, passing through La Culata, stands out. Without a doubt, it is worth it for the impressive views that can be seen from the base of Roque Nublo. In addition, you should know that Tejeda is considered the capital of the classic climbing of Gran Canaria, being able to find hundreds of routes. In addition, from this town you can contemplate the stars in a unique way, as in almost any other corner of the Canary Islands. Then we leave you with our Gallery, where you will find more images of Tejeda. Do not miss it!
