A town of great beauty

As you can see for yourself by taking a look at the images that we show you in our gallery, Peratallada is a town of great beauty. As we have anticipated, one of its great attractions is that it preserves its medieval appearance, being able to find streets here narrow and tortuous. The first written record of this town dates back to the 10th century. These are documents that refer to the Peratallada Castle, around which the population grew.

Peratallada Castle

There are many corners of this medieval town that are worth knowing, but above all the Peratallada Castle stands out, dating from the 11th century. However, it seems that in this place there had already been a fortress before. This fortified nucleus is located on top of a natural rock. Of course, it is important to keep in mind that to increase the unevenness with respect to the ground, the rock was cut vertical, as if it were a wall. From the castle the keep towers and the palace, which is oriented to the east, are preserved. In addition, you can see remains of battlements. Of course, the hallmark of the town is the Torre del Homenaje, with a rectangular floor plan, which is crowned by square battlements.

Other points of interest

Beyond the castle, Peratallada hides other corners of interest such as, for example, the portal of the Virgin, which is the only section of the walls that surrounded the town that has survived to this day in good condition. In this sense, it is important to bear in mind that this was one of the most well-fortified Catalan towns. We should also highlight the church of Sant Esteve, a Romanesque construction that dates back to the 13th century. In addition, you should know that in its narrow streets you can still find an interesting set of architecture popular. In fact, characteristic houses from the 16th century are still preserved. These are houses that are characterized by having two floors: the first, with stone-covered vaults, is intended for storage and cellars, while the second are dedicated to the interior. Some also have another floor as a loft or barn. In addition, they usually have a patio at the back.
