And we are talking about a region that brings together a great cultural, landscape and, of course, gastronomic wealth. And although rural tourism in Cáceres and Badajoz is truly worthwhile, you should not underestimate the monumental sites of the place, some of which are of great value.

Today we have proposed that you get to know Extremadura a little better. Therefore, we are going to take a tour of the most beautiful towns in Badajoz, one of its two provinces. Jerez de los Caballeros

First of all, we want to talk about Jerez de los Caballeros, a municipality dotted with history (Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Christians ... have passed through here) and monumental buildings. In fact, it has been declared a Monumental Artistic Ensemble. The traces that the Knights Templar left on the site are surprising. On the other hand, you should know that it is an important artistic center of the Extremaduran baroque.

Zafra is in the heart of Baja Extremadura. Specifically, it is located at the foot of the Sierra de Castellar. The Alcazar stands out, dating from the 15th century and which today houses a tourist hostel. Around this monument the population articulates medieval, with its characteristic narrow streets. Its Chica and Grande squares, both portified, also attract attention.

It is also worth noting the Plaza de España, the Convent of Santa Clara, the Church of Santiago and the Episcopal Palace.

Another town that we want to highlight is Olivenza, which belonged to Portugal until 1801. Therefore, its architecture presents a mixture of styles from the two countries. It has an extensive monumental heritage. The Town Hall, the Plaza de España, the walls, the Puerta del Calvario and the Magdalena church stand out, among other monuments of interest.


Fregenal de la Sierra

We also want to talk about Fregenal de la Sierra, a town that is closely linked to Ham acorn. In fact, here you will be able to know its elaboration process and taste all the gastronomic proposals that the Iberian pig allows. Among its main historical monuments we want to highlight the castle and the parish church of Santa María del Castillo.

Of course, its cultural heritage also stands out, being able to find here the Burguillos Castle, the emblem of the town. We also want to point out the Casa del Corregidor and the Cárcel Real.

The municipality of Azuaga is located on the edge of the Sierra Morena and offers the tourist numerous places of interest such as, for example, the Mudejar neighborhood, which houses art exhibitions mudejar. As for religious architecture, the parish churches of Santo Cristo del Humilladero and Nuestra Señora de la Consolación stand out. In addition, you should know that in the municipal district of Azuaga you can find around thirty historical dolmens.

Albuquerque

Finally, we want to talk about Albuquerque, which is located in the Sierra de San Pedro. It surprises its urban center with a medieval flavor, which is dominated by the Luna Castle, a building that has been the residence of important characters historical. Of course, you should know that the municipality houses many other points of interest: the medieval Gothic quarter, the walled area, the Puerta de la Villa, the Puerta de Valencia ...
