Green and blue water lagoons in the desert
The Lençois Maranhenses National Park, located in the state of Maranhao, very close to the city of Sao Luis, is considered one of the most amazing natural wonders in all of South America. During a good part of the year the place remains dry, so it has the appearance of a gigantic desert. However, when the rainy season begins, the space between the dunes, which can reach 40 meters in height, fills with water, creating numerous lagoons of green and blue waters that contrast with the white sand. Without a doubt, it is one of the strangest and most beautiful landscapes on the planet.
Two ways to explore the landscape
The Lençois Maranhenses were declared a National Park in 1981 in order to protect this unique and extraordinary territory. In fact, even access roads have not been built to reach the place, although you can explore it by jeep. Of course, it is also allowed to walk through the dunes and swim in the lakes, an activity that, of course, is very worthwhile. On the other hand, you should know that there is the possibility of making a flight panoramic, being able to get the best views of the landscape. In addition, it is highly recommended to visit the city of Sao Luis de Maranhao which, as we have mentioned before, is very close to the park. It is a population that has been declared a Historical and Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
Marine animals and migratory birds
Believe it or not, on the beaches of Lençois de Maranhenses you can find marine animals like crabs and turtles. In addition, numerous migratory birds arrive here to rest and feed.
When to visit the park
Although it sounds typical, visiting the Lençois Maranhenses National Park is worth the whole year. Of course, you should know that the landscape and the climate change during the different times of the year. Thus, it is important to bear in mind that the period of rains It runs from January to May. It is during this period that the lakes are arriving. There are many who assure that the best time to visit this place is from June to September, when the lakes are already full and the days are sunny.
