A forest in excellent condition

The Faedo de Ciñera is located in Ciñera de Gordón, a town in La Pola de Gordón, located in the province of León. In addition, it is important to note that it is part of the Alto Benasga Biosphere Reserve. It is a beech forest with more than 500 years old that is preserved in an excellent condition. In fact, it is considered one of the best-kept forests in Spain. Much of the "fault" lies with the neighbors, who are especially involved in their care.

The beech trees, the real protagonists

Unlike other beautiful forests that we can find throughout the Spanish territory, such as the Fageda d’en Jordà or the Hayedo de Montejo, the Faedo de Ciñera is quite small. However, a visit to this place is worthwhile for many reasons. The most important is to contemplate the vegetation that has grown over the centuries thanks to the Arroyo del Villar. Logically, the protagonists of this environment are the beech trees, especially the one known as Fagus, which is believed to be around 800 years old, being one of the longest-lived in the entire country.

Picnic area

If you want to spend the day in this forest you will have it very easy, since right at the entrance there are several picnic areas with tables where you can enjoy a meal surrounded by nature. In addition, it is important to note that the residents of Ciñera de Gordón have created a path of wood to conserve the delicate forest floor.

A fantastic route

You can enter this magical forest from the town of Ciñera de Gordón. Before arriving, you will find a kind of open-air museum where you will discover the mining tradition of the area. Afterwards, you will arrive at the forest and you will enjoy contemplating the leafy trees, the rocks covered with musco, the meadows and the animals. Once you have traveled the Faedo you can cross the Hoces del Villar, which will take you to the town of Villar del Puerto. This is the journey that the miners who lived in this town made for decades throughout the 20th century.

In autumn and spring

Although this excursion is worth doing during any time of the year, the truth is that in spring and, especially, in autumn, the forest acquires a charm special. Of course, it is recommended that you wear some warm clothing to protect you from the cold that can get. And it is necessary to take into account that the beech grow in humid and shady places.
