Meet the Haida

Haida Gwaii It is a dagger-shaped archipelago made up of a total of one hundred and fifty islands located about 60 miles (100 kilometers) west of British Columbia, the coast of Canada. This group of islands is known to Europeans as the islands Queen Charlotte. The best of these islands are the warm ocean currents of Japan, which provide the islands with a moderate climate.

The islands are inhabited by the people Haida. They were discovered by Europeans about two hundred years ago, when explorers and merchants suddenly encountered them. These natives were peaceful and friendly. The Haida had no record of their history before the arrival of the white man, so very little is known about his arrival on the islands. Some experts believe they came through the Bering Strait from Asia.

Others claim they came with the currents of Japan. It is interesting how many people say that the Haida escaped a great flood in the area where they lived thanks to a large raft. This, of course, bears a strange resemblance to the Genesis account in the Bible. The Haida had already established a system Social highly structured.

The tribe is divided into two: the clan of eagles and the clan of crows. The history, lineage, wealth and status of a family within each clan were carefully represented in the totems. The Haida people spend the period from spring to autumn busy with food collection and storage. Today the tribe is made up of some 7,000 people, which have been located in two towns: Old Masset and Skidegate.
