At the end of last year we learned that Barcelona was among the 28 finalists to become one of the Seven Wonder Cities of the World, an initiative launched by Bernard Weber in 2011 within his entity «New7Wonders«, After having proposed to choose the New Seven Wonders of the World and the Seven Wonders of Nature.
You may well, more than a year after meeting the 28 finalists, the chosen ones have been announced as the seven most wonderful cities in the world and, unfortunately, the Barcelona it is not among them. Of course, the chosen ones are cities that represent the global diversity of society. Do you want to know which are the Seven Wonder Cities of the World? Well watch out!
What do you think if we start talking about the capital of the Republic of Lebanon? Yes, we are referring to Beirut, a city that has more than 5,000 years of history. Known as the Paris of the Middle East, the city can boast of having hosted different civilizations: Phoenicians, Hellenes, Romans, Arabs, Ottomans ... Of course, beyond its historic center, surrounded by mosques and churches, it is a highly westernized city with great avenues, boutiques, impressive skyscrapers and plenty of entertainment and cultural offerings.
Another of the chosen cities has been Havana, the capital of Cuba, and the truth is that it is not surprising, since it has a beautiful old town, a architecture exceptional, a wide cultural offer and, of course, cheerful people and a bustling and carefree atmosphere.
We continue in America to tell you about La Paz, a city founded by the Spanish capital Alonso de Mendoza in 1548 at 4,000 meters of altitude. According to the Bolivian president, Evo Morales, It is a highland city, with generous and hospitable people and a remarkable culture and topography. According to Morales, "the last touch, the last stroke of wonder" has been the modern cable car system that connects La Paz and El Alto.
We moved to Qatar to tell you about Doha, a super modern city that stands out for its impressive skyscrapers, located in the middle of the desert. Also striking is the fact that it is the city with the highest per capita income in the world due to its Bookings oil and gas. Of course, there is no lack of luxurious hotels and shopping malls, in contrast to souks and mosques, the other side of the city.
In Malaysia there is another one of the selected cities. It is Kuala Lumpur, a city known worldwide for hosting the Petronas Towers, which are the highest in the world. The interesting thing about this place is that modern buildings mix with buildings of other styles: postmodern, colonial, Islamic, Malaysian ...
It may be the least known city on the list, but it is one of the most beautiful. This is Vigan, in the Philippines, declared a World Heritage City by the Unesco thanks to its historical and architectural value. In fact, it is the best preserved colonial city in the entire continent.
Finally, we want to tell you about Durban, a city located in South Africa that stands out for its port. In addition, here you will discover a wide cultural and leisure offer, beautiful natural parks and other tourist spots that are worth visiting.
As explained by Weber, a renowned Swiss millionaire, the election has been made among more than 1,200 candidates from 220 countries around the world. A total of 28 candidates were nominated by a panel of experts as finalists. However, they were later reduced to 21 and then to 14, which are the ones that have finally fought to be among the Seven Wonder Cities of the World. The best thing is that the winners have been chosen through a wide range of platforms and devices, being able, even, to use the vote by mail through some postcards.
