El Meandro del Melero, an impressive natural corner in Extremadura

A lake with an island in the center

Located on the eastern limit of the Hurdes, near Riomalo de Abajo, the Melero Meander is formed by the Alagón river. And it is that the course of the river is interrupted by a peninsula that creates the illusion of a lake with an island in the middle. From the Mirador de la Antigua

The best way to enjoy the Melero Meander is to see it from the Antigua lookout point. From this place you can contemplate spectacular panoramic views. Although in this place there is a parking lot to leave the cars, it is highly recommended to arrive walking. To get to the same viewpoint from the siding you will have to go through a slate path.

Trekking

Although, as we have mentioned, it is possible to get to the Melero del Melero by car, the truth is that hiking in the area is highly recommended. To get to the viewpoint on foot, you must start from Riomalo de Abajo, a farmhouse in the council of Caminomorisco. Here you will find the odd restaurant where you can enjoy some typical products, in addition to knowing samples of the architecture from Las Hurdes. The good thing about this trail is that it is perfectly signposted, in addition to being of medium-low difficulty. It starts from the natural pools of the farmhouse, an area where it is common to find bathers in summer. Along the way you can already see the meanders of the river, all with a pine forest as a backdrop. After 3 kilometers you reach the viewpoint, from where you can enjoy the views at any time of the year. In addition, you should bear in mind that the Alagón river is perfect for fishing. You can reach the base of the meander by a fork that is on the road, although the best way to enjoy it is from above.
