The Trulli of Alberobello

Today we want to talk to you about one of those magical corners that are scattered across the planet. It is located in Italy and I assure you that it is worth seeing it even once in a lifetime. We refer to the Alberobello Trulli, little houses that look like dolls, almost like a fairy tale, but that are real. What's more, although it may seem amazing, there are people living in them.

The trulli (trullos) have their origins around the year 1500 and are characterized by the conical roofs of the buildings and by their magical symbols. These types of houses are mainly in the Aia Piccola and Riona Monti districts in Alberobello, a city south of Bari, in Plugia, surrounded by lush olive groves.

UNESCO World Heritage

The Trulli of Alberobello, which have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1996, are famous throughout the world for their characteristic beauty and for representing one of the most outstanding examples. extraordinary of Italian popular architecture.

There was a time when the feudal lord imposed a tribute on the inhabitants of Alberobello for each house built. To facilitate its collapse if they stopped paying the treasury, it imposed the obligation that only stone and lime be used as a construction method, without mortar.

Characteristics of the trulli

Alberobello is universally known as the capital of the trullos. Here, each of them has different shapes and sizes. Often these are constructions unique but they can also be presented attached to a set of adjoining houses. Some have two floors. Most have the gray cone-shaped roof finished in ball or hemisphere. Inside there is a single room with a space for the fireplace, the bed and various furniture. The structure favors a good temperature: cool in summer and cozy in winter.

The trulli's vaulted ceilings have a pinnacle adorned with symbols mystics and religious that served to identify the master builder and, therefore, the purchasing power of each family
