Caldera de Taburiente National Park on La Palma

One of the most beautiful national parks in our country is the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, which is on the Canary Island of The Palm and that it is a protected area. Like all the other islands in the Canary Islands, it is volcanic in nature, so the scenery is spectacular. Still, it stands out mainly for the innumerable water resources it has, which are both superficial and underground.

In 1954 it was declared a National Park, and just 10 years ago it also received the mention of Worldwide biosphere reserve. Its surface is around 50 square kilometers and also having the Peripheral Protection Zone is almost 60. It is in the center of the island, in a strategic location that coincides with the famous geological formation of the Caldera de Taburiente, which forms a depression that is at a distance of between 600 and 900 meters above sea level.

Its origin is in an extensive crater with very hot and liquid lava that when it cools forms basaltic seals, which flood the entire landscape and form this wonderful park. But one of the great wonders of this park is the water, which you can see in a multitude of sources that spring from different parts of the park and that when joined form different currents, waterfalls or streams. One of the most spectacular formations is «The Jump of the Desfondada», which has a drop of 150 meters.

The wonderful Canarian vegetation

As for the vegetation that you can find there, the species that has the greatest presence is the canary pine, which has the peculiarity that it tolerates fires thanks to the fire that it endured for centuries because of volcanic eruptions. Its bark burns with fire but its interior is still alive. Another very interesting tree out there is the amagante, which has also grown fantastically in the volcanic soil of the island. Laurisilva, Canary willow, common fern or bejeque can also be seen throughout the park.
